MUNCIE, IN — Three people were shot, one fatally, on Muncie’s south side on the late afternoon of Sunday, May 10.
A 21-year-old male suspect is in police custody.
According to Muncie Police Chief Nate Sloan, officers were sent to the 2700 block of South Walnut Street shortly before 5:30 p.m. after dispatchers received reports of several people being shot.
Three gunshot victims were found at the scene: a 23-year-old woman who later died of multiple gunshot wounds; a 40-year-old man, in critical condition, who flown by medical helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital; and a 39-year-old man taken to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
The suspect was taken into custody by a retired city officer who happened to be nearby, and an on-duty Muncie police officer.
Names of the victims, and the suspect, were not immediately released.
No other suspects are believed to have been involved, and “there is no threat to the public at this time.” Sloan said.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Muncie Police Department’s detective division at 765-747-4867, or dispatchers at 765-747-4838.
