Thanks to Sheriff Marte and Judge Rudisill: Opinion

Thank you, Sheriff Ruben Marté and Judge Luke Rudisill, for being principled public servants. On this Independence Day and 250th Celebration, we salute you! All patriots should appreciate how you recently won a local battle in our country-wide fight to preserve the American ideals of liberty from oppressive government power and equality under the law.

Rudisill ruled in Marté’s favor against Attorney General Todd Rokita, saying Indiana’s new immigration law is so likely to be declared unconstitutional that Marté is right to disobey it. The law, known as “the Fairness Act,” went into effect July 1. It demands sheriffs hold arrested people past their scheduled release dates so ICE can pick them up. Sheriff Marté refuses to violate detainees’ fourth amendment rights to comply with this unjust state law.

“The Fairness Act” is just the opposite—unfair, bigoted, and cruel. Rokita wants to increase all police powers, everywhere. He has a staff of over 400, and we taxpayers fund their counterproductive, discriminatory work. Do we really want our state suing sheriffs and even the Indianapolis Public Schools for not helping ICE kidnap people?

Thanks again, Sheriff Marté and Judge Rudisill, for your ethical acts of courage!
