(This story has been updated with new information.)

The crash occurred east of the Campus Parkway exit.

At 2:59 a.m., on Jan. 7, 2026, a white minivan struck the back of a flatbed truck that was carrying welding tanks which exploded upon impact, Indiana State Police spokesperson John Perrine told IndyStar. The driver of the minivan, who has not been identified, died.

First responders saw two heavily damaged vehicles on fire with a lot of crash debris spread across the interstate.

The truck driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was released from a hospital Wednesday shortly after being checked out. A fuel leak from the truck forced the interstate to close after fuel spilled across all three lanes for nearly 50 yards.

Indiana State Police said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Other agencies were at the scene to assist, including INDOT, Fishers Police, the Noblesville Police, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Noblesville Fire, and Fishers Fire.
