SOUTH BEND — Two South Bend Police officers are on administrative leave after shooting and killing an armed person while responding to a call on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

A press release from the Mishawaka Police Department says that officers were unable to find the original victim of the stabbing but were directed to the apartment where they had been. Police obtained a search warrant for the apartment, and an individual from the apartment confronted police and “actively engaged in a deadly force incident with the officers.”

The shooting occurred about 1:55 Tuesday morning, MPD says.

“Through the course of the response and initial investigation, two South Bend Police Officers fired their weapons, critically wounding an armed individual related to the incident,” according to an SBPD news release.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead, and no other people or officers were injured, according to the SBPD release.

Per SBPD policy, the officers involved are on administrative leave while an incident is investigated.

Mishawaka Police Department and the St. Joseph County Police Department are handling the investigation and will release further details; once the investigation is completed, the facts, evidence and statements will be presented to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office for review. The deceased’s name will be released after the next of kin are notified, police said.

SBPD will also hold an internal investigation into the officers’ actions concerning department policy, procedure and training, according to the department.

Anyone with information about the incident can call The Mishawaka Police Department at 574-258-1781.
