South Bend Lamppost Lighting Program opens applications to homeowners.

SOUTH BEND — If your neighborhood is dark at night due to poor lighting, South Bend has opened applications to the Lamppost Lighting Program, which reduces the price of a solar-powered lamppost provided by the city.

All homeowners in South Bend are eligible to apply, though the city has reduced the cost for homeowners within four targeted areas. These areas were selected based on income, vacant lots and need for lighting.

Homeowners within the targeted boundary areas will receive a reduced rate of 90% and will owe $50 at the time of applying. Homeowners outside the boundary areas will receive a reduced rate of 50% and pay $250 at the time of applying.

The target areas are within the boundaries of:

● The Coal Line Trail to Portage Avenue and Wilber Street through Lincoln Way West and William Street.

● Western Avenue, Sheridan Street, Mayflower Road and Grandview Avenue to the train tracks.

● Sample Street and Arnold Street to the train tracks.

● Jefferson Boulevard, 33rd Street, Logan Street, Edison Road and Ironwood Drive.

To apply for the Lamppost Lighting Program, print out the application. Homeowners will need to either mail or hand deliver the application and payment to South Bend City Hall Division of Engineering, 215 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Suite 400, South Bend, IN 46601.

Applications are due by Friday, June 5.

Once a homeowner has been approved, the engineering department will reach out. The Gama Sonic Solar Lighting lamppost can be picked up at the Public Works Service Center, 731 S. Lafayette Blvd. on Thursday, June 25 from 4 to 6 p.m., or Saturday, June 27 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Homeowners will need to install the lampposts independently. The city has provided a instructional video to guide homeowners through the installation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5x0ervA2pvI.

Lampposts must be on the homeowner’s property, not interfering with utilities, not in a tree lawn and should be no more than five feet away from sidewalks. The lamppost is solar powered, so it must also be placed in direct sunlight. If you are concerned about the location of utilities, call 811 to have utilities located.

Within two weeks of picking up the lamppost, the engineering department will come to inspect to ensure the lamppost was installed properly.
