MUNCIE, IN — A candlelight prayer vigil for a young Delaware County man who has been missing since entering the Mississinewa River on Wednesday evening is planned for Friday, Aug. 14, at Union Chapel, 4622 N. Broadway.
The vigil is set to begin at 8 p.m.
Matthew Morey, 19, was one of four young men to jump into the rain-swollen river from the iron bridge along Gregory Road northwest of Albany.
The other three individuals were fairly quickly found by emergency responders and removed from the water.
Efforts to locate Morey, however, have not been successful.
Emergency personnel — including Delaware County sheriff’s deputies, Eaton and Albany police and local firefighters — searched the area on Wednesday evening and for several hours on Thursday. The search efforts included the use of drones and boats, and search teams walking the riverbank.
The search was suspended about 2 p.m. Thursday as the river “continued to rise, and the combination of swift current and significant debris has created conditions that are unsafe for boats or personnel to enter the water,” Chief Deputy Jeff Stanley of the sheriff’s department said.
Stanley said the search will resume “as soon as water levels recede and conditions allow us to do so safely.”
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family during this incredibly difficult time,” he said.
