Bloomington police are asking for the public’s help identifying a suspect who used a handgun to fire “numerous” rounds into the air at a May 24 rooftop patio party at an apartment complex near Memorial Stadium.

Bloomington Police Department released a surveillance image of the suspect, whom they described as wearing a white shirt, black pants and black-and-white shoes. The department asked for help identifying the individual, but did not provide additional physical descriptors beyond clothing.

Police said the man attended the rooftop party at The Rive, 1820 N. Walnut St., on the evening of May 24 and, based on surveillance footage, took a handgun from his waistline and “fired numerous rounds into the air in rapid succession.

“Partygoers began running from the area, and the man was last seen on camera running from the building to the southwest,” police said.

Authorities warn that firing a gun into the air can be dangerous. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say bullets fired into the air fall with sufficient force to cause injury and death.

Police said officers found four .45-caliber shell casings but reported no injuries or property damage.

Police asked that people with information about the man’s identity contact Detective Sgt. Joe Henry at 812-349-3907 or henryj@bloomington.in.gov.
