HARTFORD CITY, IN — Hartford City police say they found explosives — and meth — at a local probationer’s home.
Jonathon H. Wolfgang, 43, was charged on Thursday, July 30, with three counts of possession of destructive device, a Level 5 felony carrying up to six years in prison, and a single count of possession of meth, a Level 6 felony with a maximum 30-month sentence.
A Hartford City police detective said other officers with his department and Blackford County sheriff’s deputies were asked to accompany a probation officer on a check of Wolfgang’s home in the 600 block of North High Street on Tuesday.
Wolfgang has been on probation since he was convicted of possession of cocaine and resisting law enforcement in Blackford Superior Court in December.
On Tuesday, officers said they found the explosives — at least two were described as pipe bombs — in the attic of a detached garage on Wolfgang’s property, according to an affidavit.
Wolfgang maintained he had used explosive devices in the past to remove tree stumps and said he “had forgotten about the items” in the garage.
He maintained he knew nothing about a container found to hold a small amount of meth recovered from a shed on his property, the court document said.
He said he had failed a recent drug screen, administered as part of his probation, because he had ingested prescribed amphetamines.
The Hartford City man said marijuana found in the garage belonged to another family member.
An initial hearing in the case is set for Monday, Aug. 3.
Prosecutors are also seeking revocation of Wolfgang’s probation in the case leading to his 2025 convictions.
