'Open houses' set for workers who face layoffs amid Old National Events Plaza change

EVANSVILLE – There will be three “open houses” for the more than 200 part-time employees facing layoffs due to an upcoming management change at Evansville’s Old National Events Plaza.

Those who worked under ASG Global will now have a chance to meet with VenuWorks: the firm that will take control of ONEP’s operations starting Sept. 1.

The events will take place at ONEP between Friday and Monday. The first will run from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, with the second set for Saturday, Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. A final session is planned Monday, Aug. 18 from noon to 3 p.m.

According to the WARN notice ASG Global sent to Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry on Aug. 1, 233 workers part-time will be laid off when ASG hands the reins to VenuWorks. Fifteen full-time workers will also lose their jobs. VenuWorks plans to schedule interviews with them next week, Vanderburgh County Commission President Justin Elpers told the Courier & Press.

While VenuWorks will run ONEP, the building itself is owned by the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Building Authority.

In addition to the other workers, six Teamster members who worked for the county at the plaza will keep their jobs, but will now fall under the building authority, general manager Dave Rector said.

VenuWorks also manages Ford Center and The Victory Theatre in Downtown Evansville. In July, commissioners voted to “wind down” the contract with ASG after a committee reportedly found disappointing returns-on-investment for innkeepers tax dollars at the convention center.
