The limestone walls of Oolitic High School were torn down on Thursday, Aug. 28, after town officials determined it was too costly to maintain and were unable to sell the building. Robert Gilliland Excavating in Bloomington did the demolition.
Oolitic High School at 231 Hoosier Ave. was built in 1936 in the classical revival style with Public Works Administration (PWA) funds. After graduating its final class in 1974, the building became the Oolitic Community Center and was home to local events and the Oolitic Haunted School.
The school’s history, particularly its gymnasium, holds a place in the community’s memory, with residents recalling the 1968 undefeated boys basketball season.
