Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry has avoided a suspension after angrily chasing a referee at the end of Notre Dame’s 72-71 loss to Cal.
Notre Dame led by three when Logan Imes was called for a foul on Cal’s Dai Dai Ames as Ames drained a three-pointer. Ames hit the free throw for the four-point play, and Cal held on to win.
Shrewsberry charged after referee Adam Flore as the buzzer sounded, and his players and staff held him back. Shrewsberry did not talk to the media after the game.
The ACC did not suspend Shrewsberry, opting instead for a public reprimand.
From ESPN: “Shrewsberry aggressively confronted a member of the officiating crew following the game. The unsportsmanlike behavior that was displayed is unacceptable and tarnishes the on-court play between these institutions,” the conference said in a statement. “The ACC considers this matter closed and will have no further comment.”
Notre Dame also released a statement: “My actions were inappropriate and not symbolic of the leader I strive to be and what Notre Dame expects of its coaches and educators,” he said. “I will learn from this lack of judgement and be better in the future. I want to apologize to our team, our University and its leaders, to Coach Madsen and his team, and to the ACC, as my actions were unacceptable.”
Notre Dame fell to 10-5 (1-1 ACC) after the loss.
