The Indianapolis Colts and running back Jonathan Taylor have agreed to a contract extension. The next player on this Colts roster who should be an extension candidate is an obvious one — Quenton Nelson.
Nelson is set to enter the final year of his current deal and continues to play at a high level.
Among all guards this season, Nelson ranked fourth in Pro Football Focus’ pass-blocking efficiency and fourth in run-blocking grade. He is an eight-time Pro Bowler and has made six All-Pro teams in his career.
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell believes that Nelson’s next deal could make him the highest-paid guard in the NFL, a title currently held by Dallas’ Tyler Smith and Atlanta’s Matthew Bergeron at $24 million per year.
However, as of last week, Nelson said that he and the Colts “haven’t had any discussions,” according to The Athletic’s James Boyd. “That’s not up to me. And yeah, I’m just really thankful to be here. Excited for this year, and love this team, love my teammates.”
In ESPN’s annual ranking of the top interior offensive linemen, which is voted on by 70 NFL execs, coaches, and scouts, Nelson came in at No. 2 entering the 2026 season.
One would think an extension for Nelson is on the table, but it’s not known how the potential uncertainty beyond the 2025 season — if the Colts miss the postseason again — impacts all of this.
