Mt. Vernon senior guard and Purdue commit Luke Ertel is the Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year for boys basketball.
The 6-2 guard was named the Gatorade Player of the Year on Friday. Ertel will lead his Mt. Vernon team into the Class 4A semistate on Saturday at New Castle Fieldhouse against Decatur Central. Ertel is averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 rebounds and 6.6 assists for the 25-3 Marauders, who are ranked No. 4 in 4A.
Ertel, who maintains a 3.98 grade-point average, is now eligible for the national Gatorade Player of the Year award. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the winners in each sport.
The last two Gatorade winners from Indiana were also voted IndyStar Mr. Basketball: Greenfield-Central’s Braylon Mullins last year and Kokomo’s Flory Bidunga in 2024 (Bidunga also won the award in 2023).
