After less than four months on the job, Monroe County Democratic Party Chair Samuel Ujdak has resigned.

Ujdak, in a message to the party’s email list, said he would resign due to developments in his personal life.

“It is clear to me that I do not at this time possess the capacity to continue to serve you in this role with the commitment and clarity necessary to honor the gravity of the position,” Ujdak wrote in the letter.

The party will have to undergo reorganization under its interim chair, Vice Chair Chrissie Geels.

What’s next?

The party will have to hold a caucus within 30 days of the vacancy, which was effective 11:59 p.m. June 23. Notice for that caucus is required to be sent within 10 days of the vacancy.

The county party’s precinct chairs and vice chairs will vote in the caucus.

Why did Ujdak resign?

In his message announcing his resignation, Ujdak said developments in his personal life had been weighing on him.

“It is clear to me that I do not at this time possess the capacity to continue to serve you in this role with the commitment and clarity necessary to honor the gravity of the position,” he wrote.

He had been elected unopposed March 1, succeeding former chair and current county councilmember David Henry. Henry had been in the position for three years.

What is the party saying?

In a news release June 24, the party thanked Ujdak for his leadership of the party.

“Whether organizing events, supporting candidates, or helping us navigate difficult moments, Samuel showed up with thoughtfulness and resolve,” the statement said. “We are better, stronger, and more united because of his service, and we thank him sincerely for everything he has given to this work.”
