Man dies in South Bend Northwest neighborhood shooting; police investigate homicide

A July 5 shooting in the 300 block of O’Brien Street in South Bend that resulted in two people wounded transitioned into a homicide investigation after one of the victims died Monday, July 7, police say.

The South Bend Police Department arrived on the scene around 11:20 p.m. Saturday, July 5, in response to a report of shots fired. During the investigation, officers were told two men — identified as Jamarion Watson, 21, and an unnamed 18-year-old man — arrived at the hospital with gunshot injuries, the department said in a July 8 press release.

Watson was critically injured and the 18-year-old man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Watson died from his injuries Monday evening, the press release said.

The department’s Violent Crimes Unit is conducting the investigation. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the department’s detective bureau at 574-235-9263 or to place an anonymous tip with Michiana Crime Stoppers online, by app or by calling 574-288-7867. Tips that lead to an arrest or solving of the case can be eligible for a monetary reward.
