SOUTH BEND — Main Street between Marion Street and LaSalle Avenue is closing Monday, June 8, for a water main installation in preparation for the largest redevelopment project in South Bend’s history, the Madison Lifestyle District.
This section of road will be closed until — the city anticipates — Friday, June 26.
A detour will take drivers from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard via Marion Street and Colfax Avenue. LaSalle Avenue will remain open to traffic. Access to Scottish Rite, South Bend Civic Theatre and First United Methodist Church will remain open from Lafayette Boulevard between Marion and Madison streets.
The Madison Lifestyle District is a $24 million residential and commercial project two blocks south of Memorial Hospital. Phase one of the construction is already underway with demolition of parking lots to make way for a 625-space parking garage, according to previous Tribune reporting.
