LAFAYETTE, IN — A 22-year-old Lafayette man faces 11 charges, including sexual misconduct with a child younger than 16, according to prosecutors.
Police arrested Jacon Andrew Newman on Monday near his house in the 2700 block of Kossuth Street. He was wanted on a warrant charging him with sexual misconduct with a minor, child solicitation, attempted possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon, attempted intimidation, obstruction of justice, child exploitation, possession of child sexual abuse material and disseminating material harmful to minors.
Newman forced the girl into a sexual relationship after he contacted her on a social app, according to prosecutors, who also claim that the girl was honest with him about her age. Newman threatened to hurt the girl if she did not have sex with him, according to court documents.
Forensic examination of Newman’s phone and the victim’s phone show nude images Newman sent to the girl, as well as nude images of the girl, according to prosecutors.
Newman also wanted to buy a handgun because he feared going to prison over his relationship with the girl, and he said he planned to use the firearm to take care of a problem, according to court documents.
When police approached Newman on Monday, they searched his truck after a police dog indicated there might be drugs in it. What officers found in the truck led to additional charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, possession of meth and possession of paraphernalia.
Newman remained incarcerated Wednesday in lieu of bond, according to jail records.
