WEST LAFAYETTE, IN — A Klondike Elementary School teacher is being celebrated as a Top 10 finalist for Indiana’s Teacher of the Year program, after being named a teacher of the year within the Tippecanoe School Corp. in April.
Andrea Bornino, a physical education teacher, was selected as a finalist in the annual statewide competition, TSC said in a news release on Friday. A Purdue University alumna, Bornino has 19 years of experience in education.
In the release, Bornino said she is dedicated to changing how students and communities view physical education, working to build a school wellness culture that goes beyond the gym.
“When students learn to move and move to learn, they build the confidence, joy and habits needed for a lifetime of wellness,” Bornino said in the release.
In the classroom, Bornino combines physical activity with teamwork and problem-solving to cultivate lifelong skills, the release said. While learning about various sports, students are also taught about nutrition and teamwork building.
Bornino’s educational reach extends beyond Klondike Elementary, as Bornino has developed a reputation for leading district and statewide initiatives, securing grant money to expand programming, while mentoring rising educators as a lecturer at Purdue.
The Indiana Teacher of the Year program will move forward with its selection process, with one educator to be named Indiana Teacher of the Year in the fall.
