IU selects orthopedic surgeon as next dean of IU School of Medicine

Indiana University has selected a healthcare innovator and orthopedic surgeon-scientist as the next dean of the IU School of Medicine.

Dr. Scott D. Boden, who most recently was a tenured professor and chair emeritus of orthopedic surgery at Emory University School of Medicine, will step into the role of IU executive vice president for university clinical affairs and IUSM dean, the university announced May 28. He will officially start in the roles Sept. 8.

Boden, who spent more than three decades at Emory, received a B.A. and M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at The George Washington University Medical Center.

In a statement, Boden said he was “honored to join Indiana University and the IU School of Medicine,” which spans nine campuses across the state.

“The school already stands out for its outstanding medical education, the strength of its research and its reach across the state,” he said. “There is real momentum at IU and, building on the talent that already exists across the School of Medicine and its clinical partners, I believe the IU School of Medicine can stand among the very best in academic medicine while continuing to expand its impact across Indiana.”

As an executive vice president, Boden will report to President Pamela Whitten and serve in her cabinet. Whitten in a statement said Boden has earned a reputation as a leader “who knows what excellence in academic medicine looks like and how to scale it.”

Dr. Jay Hess, the current dean, joined the IUSM in 2013, becoming the tenth person in the medical school’s history to hold the dean position. During his tenure, the school saw a 125% increase in National Institutes of Health funding for research. Before coming to IU, Hess worked at the University of Michigan.
