IndyCar postpones Nashville race to Monday due to heavy rain, missing World Cup lead-in

LEBANON, TN. – IndyCar’s Music City Grand Prix has been postponed to Monday afternoon following hours of lightning and rain at Nashville Superspeedway. Fox’s race coverage will begin at 3 p.m. on Monday with the green flag at 3:05.

The race will be shortened to 225 laps due to the forecast heat.

The race was tentatively set to begin on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. following the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. The race was not to begin until the match, which went into extra time, finished and Fox aired the trophy presentation. Lightning began to strike around the track a little after 5:30, then on-and-off rain began in the following hour.

IndyCar had begun drying the track until rain heavier than before came down around 8:45 p.m. Less than 15 minutes later, the race was postponed.

Kyle Kirkwood will be on the pole for the race. Josef Newgarden, last year’s Music City Grand Prix winner who has two wins this season, will be beside Kirkwood on the front row.
