The Indiana high school girls track and field season has officially come to an end.
The IHSAA state championship took place Friday, June 5, at North Central High School in Indianapolis. And Southwestern Indiana was well represented with several high school standouts performing against the state’s best competition.
The star of the night? North sprinter De’Janay Layne.
The senior completed a decorated career with a state championship victory in the 200 meters at 24.30 seconds. It is her second title in the event after winning as a sophomore. The Indiana State signee also took second in the 100 meters at 12.12 seconds, only .18 behind Kenedi Bradley of Chesterton.
Few female sprinters in Evansville history had the same career success. Layne reached the state finals podium seven times, including a relay as a sophomore, highlighted by the pair of state championships. She is the only athlete to win the 200 meters on the girls’ side and joins a rare club with multiple individual state titles: Alexia Smith (Bosse), Yamani Hunter (Bosse), Cassandra Lander (Bosse) and Kayla Tucker (Harrison/Reitz).
Layne swept the City, Southern Indiana Athletic Conference, sectional and regional titles in both events this spring.
Only three other athletes from the Evansville area reached the podium. Jasper sophomore Katherine Woebkenberg earned fourth in the pole vault after clearing 12-feet, 6 inches. Boonville senior Ava Kelley was eighth in the 100 (12.26) in addition to a 16th-place finish in the long jump. Forest Park freshman Ellie Meunier finished ninth in the 400 (57.38).
Carmel was the team champion. North was the best performing area team, as Layne’s 18 points earned helped them finish 11th in the final standings.
