Southgate — Police shot one person in the Southgate Meijer parking lot on Fort Street on Saturday afternoon, according to the Southgate Police Department.
The department said a man was shot at the Meijer lot. An investigation is being done by the Michigan State Police. Officers from both departments cleared the scene around 8 p.m.
No other details were immediately available, including what led to the shooting or the condition of the person shot.
The shooting happened during the annual Downriver Cruise, widely known as the Fort Street Cruise, where people camp along the sides of Fort Street and surrounding areas to watch specialty cars and motorcycles drive by.
A witness, who declined to give his name, said he was set up with friends in the grassy area along the western side of the parking lot, ready to grill and watch the cars, when around 4 p.m. they saw two people, a man and a woman, leave the store and be chased by police. He said about five police vehicles suddenly arrived on the scene.
The police jumped out and stopped the couple, the witness said, adding that it appeared the man tried to flee the scene.
By the time they reached a sidewalk in the grassy area, a confrontation took place, the witness said. He said he was watching the police place the woman in handcuffs when the man was shot.
While the witness was looking at the woman, he heard a shot and looked back to see the man on the ground.
