Hot weather prompts shift of early-morning construction on John Purdue Block development

LAFAYETTE, IN — Construction work that was scheduled for early Monday morning for the John Purdue Block development is being shifted to Tuesday to accommodate extreme summer weather.

A joint release between the city of Lafayette and Fishers-based Meyer Najem Construction originally said concrete work at the 48 N. Second St. location would need to be at 3 a.m. on Monday, June 23. But the city said on Friday in a second announcement that the early morning construction has been shifted to Tuesday, June 24.

Vanessa Combs, senior project manager at Meyer Najem, said the shift in operating hours will be required only for that day, and no additional early morning start dates are known at this time.

“We are seeing accelerated evaporation at the top layer of our concrete pours, which can lead to concrete finish issues, particularly with the thickness of post-tensioned slabs,” Meyer Najem Construction said in the release. “This early start will allow crews to place and finish a significant volume of concrete before temperatures and wind speeds increase, helping preserve slab integrity and finish quality.”

The company said in the release it apologizes for any inconvenience from early morning noise at the site as officials remain committed to “ensuring construction at the John Purdue Block meets the highest standards of durability and safety while adapting to evolving environmental conditions.”
