Music is in the air this weekend in Bloomington — both indoors and outside. If you’d rather watch roller derby, you’re in luck: There are two bouts coming to Frank Southern Ice Arena. If comics are your thing, check out Tuesday’s event at the library. On Wednesday, you can help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sherwood Oak Park.
Three nights of music at Orbit Room
Three nights mixing music at the Orbit Room begins Thursday, July 16, with Sounds from the Black Hole. On Friday, it’s Thelma and the Sleaze, Dandelioness and Krista Detor sharing the stage. On Saturday, performances will be by Drakkar Sauna, Busman’s Holiday and Peter King.
The music will be happening at 107 N. College Ave., Suite 1 (downstairs).
Granfalloon concert features Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
Some of the best modern acoustic musicians Gillian Welch and David Rawlings perform American folk music at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Switchyard Park as part of the Granfalloon Concert Series. Their most recent studio album, “Woodland,” won the 2025 Best Folk Album Grammy award. Granfalloon 2026 is presented by IU Arts and Humanities Council, inspired by Hoosier author Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Tickets to the all-ages concert are $43 general admission, $74 pit and $156 VIP. For tickets, go online to tinyurl.com/3fymwnhn.
Saturday is roller derby night at Frank Southern Ice Arena
It’s a double-header roller derby bout on Saturday at Frank Southern Ice Arena, 2100 S. Henderson St.
The derby fun begins at 5 and goes until 9 p.m.; doors open at 4 p.m. Admission is $12 per person. The first bout pits Bloomington Blockheads against Flat Track Attack. The second round, a mixer, is Bumblebees (black) and Butterflies (white/pastels).
Comic Book Day with comics, manga at the library
Vintage Phoenix Comic Books is teaming up with the Monroe County Public Library for 8 hours of Comic Book Day. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, people can drop in for the annual celebration of comics and manga. Create a piece of sequential art from start to finish in one day.
Art supplies will be provided, as well as prizes, lunch and snacks. It’s for ages 7 and older at the downtown library, 303 E. Kirkwood Ave.
Sherwood Oaks Park celebrates 50 years
Sherwood Oaks neighbors, your park is having a birthday — and everyone’s invited to stop by 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, to celebrate. Challenge a neighbor to pickleball or cornhole, enjoy a popsicle, and spend a little time with friends old and new. So stop by 1600 E. Elliston Drive.
There’s now registration and no schedule. Be aware the parking lot has six marked vehicle spaces and one handicap accessible space. A bike rack is at the northwest corner of the tennis courts.
