Fever sign Martinsville native, former Purdue player to training camp contract. What it means

INDIANAPOLIS — Another local player is joining the Indiana Fever training camp.

Kayana Traylor, out of Martinsville, signed a training camp contract with the Fever on Monday, the team announced. Traylor, a guard, played three years at Purdue from 2018-21 before transferring to Virginia Tech, helping the Hokies to their first Final Four appearance in 2023.

Traylor was drafted No. 23 to the Chicago Sky in the 2023 WNBA Draft, but was waived before the season started. She played in three games for the Minnesota Lynx on a hardship contract later that season, and was cut when the Lynx were no longer eligible for hardship.

The 5-foot-9 guard has since spent multiple seasons playing overseas. She also competed in Athletes Unlimited earlier this year, averaging 8.1 points and 2.5 assists per game.

Traylor’s contract is at the minimum salary, non-guaranteed, and won’t hit the cap unless she makes the 12-player roster at the end of training camp. Even if she doesn’t make the standard roster, Traylor could potentially take one of the Fever’s two developmental team spots — new under the collective bargaining agreement, meaning she would remain inactive for most games, but be able to practice with the team and step into the standard roster as needed.
