EVANSVILLE — A man who suffered what appeared to be minor burns in a March 21 kitchen fire died from his injuries nine days later, the Evansville Fire Department announced Tuesday.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was found outside a home in the 1500 block of Monroe Avenue when firefighters first arrived March 21 after receiving a report of a structure fire. Crews discovered the blaze had already been extinguished by the time they arrived.
Firefighters treated the man at the scene for what the EFD described at the time as “minor burns” before transporting him to a local hospital. His condition worsened in the days that followed, and he was transferred to a burn center in Louisville, Kentucky, for specialized care.
He died Monday, according to EFD spokeswoman Jessica Costello, who did not describe what complications are believed to have contributed to the man’s death.
Investigators determined the fire originated in the home’s kitchen and ruled the cause accidental.
“The Evansville Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this loss,” Costello wrote.
