With the head coaching job at Penn State recently opening up, its athletic director, Pat Kraft will reportedly make a run at a few big names, one of them could be Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman.
PSU alum and current CBS Sports college football analyst Adam Breneman posted his top list of candidates on Sunday, which included the Irish’s leader, and now on Tuesday morning, On3’s Pete Nakos has sources saying that Kraft will “take a couple of big swings during the hiring process. One name that he may make a run at is Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman.”
I will be the first one to say that this most likely isn’t happening, but it is certainly not out of the question. The Nittany Lions were paying James Franklin $8 million-per-season plus bonuses, which isn’t quite what Freeman makes, but isn’t far off. Expect a much bigger raise offer if Penn State does try to lure him away.
It does make sense for Penn State to put out feelers to the top coaches in the country, however Notre Dame’s head coach is in a very comfortable spot, especially with how the College Football Playoff format is now. There aren’t many things that another school could offer Freeman to entice him to leave South Bend, but you have to commend the Nittany Lions for swinging for the fences with this hire.
