Coroner's office preliminarily rules Motel 6 death a suicide

LAFAYETTE, IN — The death of a Lafayette man found hanging last week from a Motel 6 balcony has been preliminarily ruled a suicide.

Tippecanoe County coroner’s officials said Julius Powell, 25, is the man police found hanging on July 1.

A forensic autopsy was performed later that week, and preliminary results indicated that Powell died from hanging and his death was preliminarily ruled a suicide, according to the coroner’s office. An official ruling will come after the results of toxicology tests are returned.

Police received a 911 call about 5 a.m. July 1 reporting a man hanging from a second-floor balcony. Officers attempted to give Powell emergency medical services, but it was too late.

Police investigations later determined Powell had been dead for at least an hour before anyone noticed and called 911.
