Central Indiana to see 'elevated fire risk,' warm temps on April 9

It’ll be warming up across central Indiana on Thursday, April 9, ahead of rain and thunderstorms that could arrive on Friday, April 10, according to the National Weather Service.

The daily high is expected to be 78 with a low of 57 overnight. The warmer temperature, wind gusts and relative humidity (RH) today create an elevated fire risk.

“Slightly elevated fire conditions are expected this afternoon with minimum RH values as low as 27 to 32 percent and wind gusts between 25 to 35 mph,” NWS Indianapolis said in their hazardous weather outlook. “Max wind gusts will primarily be confined to northern portions of central Indiana.”

The chance for rain and thunderstorms returns to central Indiana Friday night, so Hoosiers will want to keep an eye on the forecast in case conditions become more severe.

What does an elevated fire risk mean?

It’ll be warmer today, the ground will be dry and there will be higher winds. An elevated fire risk means that if you are doing any outdoor burning, the current conditions make it more dangerous.

“We recommend you don’t burn, as the conditions will better over the next few days, but if you do, just be cautious,” Andrew White, meteorologist with NWS told IndyStar.
