Very few had Bloomington South and Lake Central making it to the state championship game when the playoffs began a month ago.
Yet, here they are, getting ready to battle for an IHSAA Class 4A baseball state title Saturday night at Victory Field in Indianapolis. First pitch has a scheduled start time of 8 p.m., but that could be moved back, depending on how long the Class 2A game takes before them.
It’s not that South (25-6) or Lake Central (27-8) were bad teams during the regular season. But the Panthers were ranked No. 10 in the final 4A coaches poll, while the Indians received no votes at all. Both had dramatic wins in semi-state action last weekend as well, with Bloomington winning a 1-0 thriller over Evansville North while getting no-hit, while Lake Central needed a walk-off hit to beat Zionsville in the semi-state semifinal.
Lake Central won 4A titles in 2012 and 2024. Bloomington’s lone title came before it was even South high school, as it was just one Bloomington in 1972.

That was fast. Keegan O’Bryan with a lead-off triple, then an RBI single from Parker Robinson two pitches later made it 1-0. Indians double their lead then with an RBI groundout from Andrew Brower a few batters later.

South had a leadoff double from Reid Walker and two-out walk from Connor Couch, but were unable to score.
