SOUTH BEND — Students from participating non-South Bend Community School Corp. public or private schools may have the opportunity to enroll in SBCSC’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programming under a new agreement the board approved June 15.
SBCSC offers a range of CTE programs for its students at schools around the district, allowing them to earn dual credit, dual enrollment or industry certifications before graduation.
During the June 15 board meeting, Director of CTE and Adult Education Drew Findlay said the district has always allowed students from parochial schools it partners with to participate in its CTE programming, provided there are available spots after SBCSC students enroll.
But, he said, the agreement simply formalizes that process for the 2026-27 school year.
“At this time, SBCSC is working with a number of non-public school partners and evaluates participation on a case-by-case basis,” Yankey said.
SBCSC spokesperson Blair Yankey told The Tribune that the agreement isn’t limited to non-public or parochial schools. In fact, he said, a New Prairie United School Corp. student participated in SBCSC’s aviation program last year.
On Monday, Matt Lawson, general counsel for SBCSC, said the district retains control of program operations, enrollment, curriculum and staffing, while the sending school is responsible for providing transportation and tuition payments to SBCSC.
The district will continue the current tuition structure for now, Findlay said, which is based on the sending school’s average daily membership. But down the road, he said, and especially if the program expands to include additional sending schools, the plan is to reevaluate how tuition is calculated for the 2027-28 school year.
