Of the 16 area qualifiers for the Bloomington South girls wrestling regional on Saturday, Jan. 10, a half dozen are back for a second time.
Of those six, only Bloomington South’s Mariah Pope returns as a state qualifier in 2025, the first year the IHSAA sponsored a postseason tournament. The others hope last year’s experience will help them achieve a breakthrough this time.
It takes two wins to earn a spot in the state finals on Jan. 17 in Indianapolis, similar to the format used at the boys’ semistate level. From there, wrestlers are guaranteed a top-four finish and a berth to the finals. The first-round format pits four sectional champions against fourth-place finishers while second and third-place wrestlers meet. Those winners will fight for the trips to state.
Action will start at 10 a.m. with area qualifiers in every bracket but 130 and 170 pounds.
Pope is in the 100-pound bracket with South’s Lila Pierce at 120 and Jaclyn Hillenburg at 235 as regional returnees. Also back are North’s Alexzandra Burns and Owen Valley’s Aaliyah White, who will face Burns in their opener at 135 and OV’s Grace Mascoe at 235.
First-time regional qualifiers are South’s Joslyn Hererra (105), Madison Maxwell (125), Adrianna Burns (140) and Samiya Love (190); North’s Penelope Warren (125) and Sarah Vorice (155); Owen Valley’s Katarina Reuter (110), Alyssa Livingston (115), Kyra Newby (145) and Edgewood freshman Eden Norton (140).
