The 2026 IHSAA high school football season is right around the corner, and East Central Indiana is full of players ready to make a big impact for their schools on the gridiron.
Practices officially began for high school football on Monday, Aug. 3, and the season is set to kick off on Friday, Aug. 21. Last season saw one team from the area win a sectional title, as Yorktown defeated Pendleton Heights to claim its first Class 4A sectional trophy.
Here’s a look at 30 defensive players to watch in East Central Indiana this fall.

Isaiah Amerson, Muncie Central
Senior, Defensive Line
Amerson returns to a loaded Muncie Central defensive front after logging 41 tackles with 8.5 tackles for loss and two sacks last season. At 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, Amerson’s physical frame and production have garnered some Division I interest, including offers from UTSA, UConn, San Diego State, Toledo and Middle Tennessee State.
Luke Anderson, Monroe Central
Senior, Linebacker
Anderson is the top returning tackler for the Golden Bears after racking up 58 total tackles with five tackles for loss and two sacks as a junior. He also has a nose for the football, evidenced by his three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries last year.
Brady Bannister, Blackford
Senior, Linebacker
Bannister is the Bruins’ most productive returning defender after logging 47 tackles and a fumble recovery last year. He was also named an offensive player to watch at running back and is a standout wrestler for Blackford.
Corbin Batten, Blackford
Junior, Linebacker
Another two-way Bruin who made both our offensive and defensive players to watch lists, Batten recorded 34 tackles with four tackles for loss and one sack last season.
Blake Bonifas, Jay County
Senior, Defensive Lineman
Bonifas will anchor the trenches for Jay County and has big shoes to fill with the graduation of Aiden Phillips, a second-team all-conference selection by the Allen County Athletic Conference a year ago.
Braylon Black, Winchester Community
Senior, Linebacker
The Golden Falcons graduated 14 seniors that made up the nucleus of last year’s 8-2 team. With so much production to replace, Black is expected to play a much bigger role both offensively and defensively. He recorded 17 tackles with two tackles for loss across six appearances last year.
Demarshuwn Clemens, Muncie Central
Junior, Defensive Line
At 6-foot-4, 262 pounds, Clemens is a monster on the defensive interior for the Bearcats. The IFCA Junior All-State selection finished third on the team with 59 total tackles last season, had a team-high 10 tackles for loss with 2.5 sacks and brought down two interceptions as well. He is a fast-rising prospect and currently holds Division I offers from Missouri, Kansas, Miami (Ohio) and San Diego State.
Nic Cope, Monroe Central
Sophomore, Linebacker
Cope debuted with 14 tackles and a tackle for loss as a freshman last season and is expected to play a much bigger role in the Golden Bears front seven as a sophomore.
Cash Cowley, Shenandoah
Senior, Defensive Lineman
A force on the Raiders’ front, Cowley was second on the team last season with 80 total tackles, including 12 tackles for loss and two sacks. As a sophomore, he racked up 47 tackles with 11.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. Cowley is also an offensive player to watch at running back.
Kaden Crumes, Yorktown
Senior, Defensive Back
Crumes earned an all-Hoosier Heritage Conference nod as a free safety last year, finishing with 39 tackles, five pass deflections and two interceptions. He was also named an offensive player to watch at wide receiver and is a standout player for Yorktown baseball as well.
Caden Dance, Monroe Central
Senior, Defensive Back
Dance recorded 19 tackles and a team-high eight pass breakups last season. He also had two interceptions and a fumble recovery that he returned for a 92-yard touchdown. Dance was also named an offensive player to watch.
Ranen DuBois, Wes-Del
Senior, Linebacker
DuBois, also a star Wes-Del wrestler, racked up 35 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble and a recovery. With the graduation of last year’s leading tackler Brock Nauman, DuBois will fill a key role in the middle of the Warriors defense.
Bryan Fields, Jay County
Senior, Linebacker
The son of head coach Eddie Fields is a senior team leader in the middle of the Patriots defense and also a standout wrestler.
Wyatt Foster, Jay County
Senior, Defensive Back
With second-team all-ACAC cornerback Nick Laux graduated, Foster will step in as the No. 1 corner for the Jay County defense.
Zach Gillam, Wes-Del
Junior, Defensive Back
Gillam finished second on the team in tackles as a sophomore, racking up 57 total tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss and one sack. He also deflected four passes, recovered three fumbles and had one interception which he returned for a touchdown.
Clayton Heflin, Blackford
Senior, Defensive Line
Heflin had 15 tackles with four tackles for loss, a forced fumble and fumble recovery last season. He is expected to anchor both sides of the trenches for the Bruins this year.
Kye Hiatt, Muncie Central
Senior, Defensive Back
Hiatt was also listed as an offensive player to watch at wide receiver, but he might be even more impactful as a safety on defense. The IFCA Junior All-State selection is the Bearcats’ top returning tackler with 67 stops and also had six interceptions last year.
Maverick Holbrook, Delta
Senior, Linebacker
Holbrook is Delta’s top returning tackler after racking up 54 stops in eight games last year, including a team-high 11 tackles for loss and three sacks.
Carter Jackson, Delta
Senior, Defensive Back
Jackson logged 25 tackles and a team-high 13 passes deflected as the Eagles’ free safety last year. He is also a key returner on special teams and was among the top offensive players to watch as a wide receiver.
Brennan Lanter, Winchester Community
Senior, Defensive Back
Also an offensive player to watch as a receiver, Lanter logged 14 tackles, six pass deflections and one fumble recovery for Winchester last season.
Logan Mendoza, New Castle
Senior, Defensive Line
While New Castle is no longer in the HHC, Mendoza earned an all-conference nod from the conference last year and will look to do the same in the first year of the Eastern Crossroads Conference. He finished with 38 tackles and eight tackles for loss last season.
Brendan Pruett, Shenandoah
Senior, Linebacker
Pruett returns to the middle of the Raider defense after finishing third on the team with 55 tackles last season. He also had five tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.
Jackson Ryder, Shenandoah
Senior, Defensive Back
Ryder only made two tackles in one appearance last season but is expected to play a big role for the Raiders as their starting strong safety this season. As a sophomore, he played in eight games and made 12 total tackles.
Luke Sherrell, New Castle
Senior, Linebacker
A team captain who was also named an offensive player to watch at running back, Sherrell is the Trojans’ top returning defender after totaling 48 tackles, five tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks as a junior last season.
Cade Utsler, Delta
Senior, Defensive End
Utsler only logged seven tackles and 0.5 sacks in three games for the Eagles last season but is expected to be a key piece of their defensive front this year. He is an all-around athlete who also contributed to Delta’s regional championship-winning basketball team and was an all-state performer in the high jump at the IHSAA track and field state finals.
Joey Vasquez, Winchester Community
Junior, Linebacker
With almost the entire starting defense from 2025 graduated, Vasquez is the Golden Falcons’ most productive returning defender after racking up 30 tackles with seven tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery last year. He also made our offensive players to watch list as a running back.
Diezel Walker, Yorktown
Senior, Linebacker
Yorktown’s top returning tackler finished second on the team a season ago with 79 total tackles, including six tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He also logged two pass deflections, one interception and two fumble recoveries, one of which he brought back for a touchdown.
Preston West, New Castle
Sophomore, Linebacker
West gained some valuable reps as a freshman last season due to injuries ravaging New Castle’s starting lineup. He had 18 tackles and a fumble recovery across six games last year and is expected to step into a larger role on the Trojan defense in year two.
Chris Wilson, Yorktown
Senior, Defensive End
Wilson is the highest-rated football recruit to ever play in Delaware County — at least in the era of star ratings. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound edge rusher holds a 4-star rating and is the fifth-highest rated recruit in the state of Indiana for the Class of 2027, according to 247sports composite rankings. He is also the only player in the area’s history to achieve a 4-star rating in the 247sports composite (which dates back to 2000). Wilson logged 25 tackles with seven tackles for loss and four sacks along with four passes deflected, a forced fumble and an interception. He committed to West Virginia in June.
Eli Wright, Wes-Del
Senior, Linebacker
Also an offensive player to watch at running back, Wright will be a key cog in the Warrior defense. He recorded 36 tackles with 6.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and one interception that he returned for a touchdown.
