3 Colts' defenders to watch for during upcoming OTA practices

After highlighting three Indianapolis Colts players on offense to watch during OTAs, let’s jump to the defensive side of the football.

In this third phase of offseason programs, no contact can take place, but teams can do competitive team periods. OTAs are also voluntary for the players.

Throughout OTAs and training camp, there will be plenty to watch for on defense, but these three players in particular will have my attention.

CB Justin Walley

Prior to his injury last summer, Walley had put together a strong showing throughout training camp. This year, he will now be the Colts’ starting nickel cornerback following Kenny Moore’s release.

Walley came to the NFL with strong ball production at the college level, and he was quite stingy in coverage, allowing a completion rate of 53% over four seasons, according to PFF. The Colts also appreciate the competitive juice he brings to the defense and his instincts.

DE Jaylahn Tuimoloau

Tuimoloau’s role as a rookie was quite small, playing just 215 total defensive snaps on the season. This year, however, he’ll have the opportunity to earn starting reps opposite of Laiatu Latu. Likely competing with Tuimoloau will be Arden Key.

A second-round pick by the Colts in 2025, a Year 2 leap for Tuimoloau this season will be a must — not only because the Colts need more pass rush juice, but as an early round pick, that’s the expectation.

Coming out of the offseason, Tuimoloau feels very good about where he’s at.

S AJ Haulcy

Haulcy will presumably be competing with Jonathan Owens, Juanyeh Thomas, and Hunter Wohler for the starting safety role next to Cam Bynum. If Haulcy can be the one to earn those snaps, the ceiling for the Colts’ safety position will be raised.

He brings another ballhawking presence to the Colts’ secondary, not to mention that his versatility could free up Lou Anarumo to utilize Bynum in additional ways as well. Haulcy will bring playmaking and added flexibility to the back-end of the defense.
