Thrust into spotlight on 9/11, George W. Bush chief of staff will tell his story in Peoria

PEORIA — President George W. Bush’s former chief of staff Andrew Card will present a firsthand account of 9/11 during a visit this month to the Peoria Riverfront Museum.

Card will visit the Downtown museum Sept. 11 as part of its “Museum Conversations” series, taking audience members through the fated day from his first alert of the New York terror attacks through to the White House’s response.

Card was thrust into the spotlight in 2001 when he was the first to alert Bush a second airplane had struck the World Trade Center, a moment well-documented in photos and videos from the day. Bush was in a Florida classroom that morning, reading a book to schoolchildren when the attacks occurred.

The museum will also host a meet and greet opportunity with Card, including photo and signature opportunities.

Tickets for the event are $45 for museum members and $55 for non-members. Meet-and-greet opportunities are $100 for members. The conversation will begin at 11 a.m.
