Strong winds, hail, tornadoes possible in central Illinois this week

SPRINGFIELD – A “significant severe weather event” is expected for central Illinois on Wednesday, June 17.

The central part of the state is forecast to be under a level three out of five for severe storm risk, according to the National Weather Service.

The main concern is currently the afternoon on Wednesday through the late evening. Hazards include damaging wind gusts, large hail, and tornadoes.

What is uncertain is the intensity level of the severe hazards. Risk areas could shift as some details become clearer, a graphic from the NWS out of Lincoln reads.

NWS confirms tornado last week

The weather service has identified a storm on June 10 as an EF1 tornado that impacted Springfield.

No injuries or deaths were reported.

Peak winds were estimated at 110 mph, with a track length of about 24 miles, and a max width of 250 yards.

The tornado impacted the area between 11:04 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

The tornado began about three miles west of the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield, where it lofted 6,000 pound aircraft hangars and rolled an enclosed trailer, a summary reads from the National Weather Service.

Some of the most significant damage was at the Animal Protective League animal shelter on Taintor Road.

The tornado continued east-southeast, producing tree and building damage around Camp Butler National Cemetery, and through Mechanicsburg, damaging several farm outbuildings and trees along its path.

The tornado ended about five miles east of Mechanicsburg just north of the Sangamon River.
