School bus company to close three Illinois sites and lay off employees

A transportation company plans to close multiple locations in Illinois, resulting in layoffs of more than 250 employees in the coming months, according to information reported to the state.

Illinois Central School Bus reported its plans via the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, also known as the WARN Act.

The bus company plans to close its facility in Godfrey and lay off 160 workers between May 22 and June 8, according to WARN reports submitted this month.

The law practice Strauss Borrelli PLLC is investigating to determine whether the company failed to provide affected employees with at least 60 days’ notice.

Illinois Central School Bus also submitted a WARN report March 2 to announce plans to shut down its Waterloo facility and lay off 37 employees. The layoffs are scheduled to begin May 25 and end June 30.

In a March 20 WARN report, the bus company reported its intent to close a site in Wilmington and lay off 55 workers there between May 29 and June 30.

Lost contracts were the reasons for the closures, according to the WARN reports submitted in March.

The Journal Star reached out to Illinois Central School Bus by telephone and email but did not receive a response. Illinois Central School Bus is headquartered in Joliet and also known as North America Central School Bus. It is a collective umbrella for school bus companies, according to its website.
