Normal West football claims ranked win over Chatham Glenwood

CHATHAM — No. 6 Normal West football used its full arsenal to eke out a 35-26 victory over No. 10 Chatham Glenwood in a Class 6A ranked season opener on Friday, Aug. 21.

Junior quarterback Chase Sennett dialed up four touchdowns, twice to junior receiver K’Shaun Jones. Senior running back Cody Muhlbauer, meanwhile, barreled ahead for 142 yards on 28 carries, including 106 yards in the second half.

Sennett hurled a 26-yard TD pass to Jones with just 26.4 seconds left in the second quarter for a 14-13 halftime lead before opening the third period with a 30-yard TD screen pass to senior wideout Efoe Baskins. The Wildcats (1-0) extended the margin 28-13 on their next possession thanks to Sennett’s 11-yard TD dart to sophomore receiver Marceon Williams.

Sennett threw for 326 yards on 23 of 31 passing. Jones hauled in six grabs for 125 yards, while Baskins also had six receptions for 105 yards and a score. Jones also scored on a short run after a brief fumble near the goal line in the first quarter for three total TDs on the night.

It was far from a demoralizing loss for the Titans (0-1), who never keeled over until a personal foul upended their final possession.

Glenwood junior running back Malik Banks reeled off a 52-yard TD run late in the third quarter and reached paydirt again on the ensuing possession on a wily 10-yard screen pass from junior quarterback Michael Young.

Banks had eight carries for 63 yards. Young went 18 of 29 for 164 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in his varsity debut, plus a TD sneak in the second quarter.
