Chicago Bears rookie center Logan Jones has an opportunity to come in and compete for the starting job on the offensive line, but he’ll have his work cut out for him.
An anchor at the center position for the Iowa Hawkeyes during his collegiate career, Jones joins Chicago after winning the Rimington Trophy award for the nation’s top center in college football last season, and he has veteran Garrett Bradbury to compete with coming into his first season in the NFL.
While there’s no arguing the importance of the center position across the league, Jones may have even more considerable pressure in trying to earn the spot as a rookie in Ben Johnson’s offense. The center-quarterback relationship is of the utmost importance, evident by the success Chicago had with Caleb Williams and veteran Drew Dalman last season, turning around the offense as a whole and significantly reducing the number of sacks Williams took in his second season.
Understanding the complexity of his head coach’s offense, Jones knows there will be a lot on his plate, and he’s ready for the challenge.
“There’s a lot that I’ve got to work on to get better at,” Jones said. “Our offense, they put a lot on the center’s plate, which is honestly kind of fun, I kind of like that. To be able to learn and grow and go through all that and just continue to learn the game, it’s going to be a lot of fun. I know I’ve got a long road ahead of me, but it’s something I look forward to. I’m not going to be perfect. Nobody’s going to be perfect, it’s an imperfect game. But as long as I continue to grow, learn, have fun, and then at the end of the day just play some football, keep it simple, run off the ball and block some guys.”
Jones was a staple at Iowa, taking over for NFL standout Tyler Linderbaum after he departed the Hawkeyes for the NFL, and Jones stepped in to the starting role and never looked back. While it could be easier for the Bears to side with a veteran in Bradbury as the starter to open 2026, Jones sounds determined to put himself in position to make a run to be the starter sooner rather than later.
