Rookies were a big part of the Chicago Bears offense last season. Four different rookies found the end zone for the Bears last season, including wide receivers Luther Burden III and Jahdae Walker.
Every Bears fan remembers Walker’s touchdown on fourth-and-goal against the Green Bay Packers to send the game into overtime and ultimately give Chicago the win. What led up to that touchdown was a lot of hard work in practice and being a good special teamer to allow the undrafted rookie out of Texas A&M to make the roster.
Burden had a different path to the NFL. He was drafted in the second round out of college after expecting to be a first-rounder. Burden played like a first-round pick last season with splash plays throughout the season and his best overall performance against the San Francisco 49ers near the end of last season.
So far in training camp, Burden has been one of the standouts. However, on Saturday, he collided awkwardly with cornerback Tyrique Stevenson during one-on-one drills and did not return back to practice. Walker did not see it happen, but he’s confident that Burden is going to be fine.
“I’m not gonna lie, I don’t really see stuff like that,” Walker said. “But when I heard about it, I was like, ‘Wait, where’s Luther at?’ Because coach was like, ‘Go in at the Z,’ I’m like, ‘Wait, where’s Luther?’ And it was like, yo, and I’m like dang. But he’s gonna be fine. He’s a dawg, so he’s gonna be back soon.”
The severity of Burden’s injury is still unknown, but he was able to limp off the field under his own power, which is a positive sign for the Bears.
