SPRINGFIELD – Turkey day is still a ways out, as far as weather forecasts go, but Springfield will likely see temperatures in the low 50s on Thanksgiving, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service said.
An extended outlook shows there are indications of a storm system in the Springfield on Thursday and Friday, but the timing is uncertain, said Ed Shimon, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, out of Lincoln.
Indications of rain and a few thunderstorms are possible in the vicinity of Thanksgiving. There is a cold front that could impact Thanksgiving temperatures, depending on its timing.
A temperature in the low 50s is a safe estimate, though it could be a little cooler if the cold front arrives on Thanksgiving morning, Shimon said.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty when you’re dealing with a forecast that’s 10 or 11 days out,” Shimon said. “The models change in timing quite a bit as it approaches.”
What’s the weather like, usually?
Turkey Day in Springfield normally sees a high of 45 and a low of 28.
Are there other metrics to look at?
Shimon was looking at two models in particular, he said, referencing a European model and an American GFS model.
As the holiday nears, the easiest way to scope out the weather is head to the the weather service’s website or to your preferred weather sites.
But if you’re hankering to get a nuanced extended outlook, you can also check out the Old Farmer’s Almanac or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for their long-range precipitation and temperature outlooks.
