Illinois police scale Dunkin' for charity. What to know about 'Cop on a Rooftop' fundraiser

Have you noticed any groups of policemen casually standing on the rooftop of your local Dunkin’ today and wondered why they’re up there?

You may be surprised to hear that the display is part of an annual fundraiser in partnership with the Special Olympics.

What is ‘Cop on a Rooftop’?

This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the Dunkin’ partnership with the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois. Over the years, this partnership, jovially titled “Cop on a Rooftop,” has raised nearly $10 million in Illinois.

Today, law enforcement officers will be stationed at select Dunkin’ locations across the state from 5 a.m. until noon to rally support for their local Special Olympics athletes. The fundraiser has already raised more than $60,000 this year, according to the Special Olympics Illinois website.

How do I donate to ‘Cop on a Rooftop’?

You can either donate at a participating Dunkin’ location or through the Special Olympics Illinois website. Those who donate in person qualify for a free donut or hot coffee coupon.
