Former Bears running back traded to Texans

Former Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery has been traded from the Detroit Lions to the Houston Texans, as first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

As far as compensation goes, the Lions are receiving a fourth-round pick, offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and a seventh-round selection, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Montgomery was selected by the Bears in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and he spent his first four seasons with Chicago. In that span, Montgomery rushed for 3,609 yards, averaging 3.9 yards per carry, and 26 touchdowns. He added 155 catches for 1,240 yards and four scores.

Montgomery signed with the Lions in 2023, where current head coach Ben Johnson served as offensive coordinator through the 2024 season. Montgomery was part of one of the league’s best running back duos with Jahmyr Gibbs. Last season with Detroit, Montgomery 158 rushes for 716 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry, and five touchdowns. He also had 24 catches for 192 yards.
