Dunlap High School has been named one of Illinois’ top 50 high schools, according to U.S. News and World Report’s annual rankings of the nation’s best educational institutions.
Dunlap was ranked the 48th best high school in the state, according to this year’s rankings, released on Tuesday. Nearly 18,000 high schools across the country were ranked with the help of NTI, a top research firm, utilizing six different criteria: college readiness, breadth of college curriculum, state assessment proficiency and performance, underserved student performance and graduation rate.
Each score is weighted and then computed into a single score from 0-100 reflecting the school’s performance across those unique metrics.
Nationally, Dunlap was ranked 985th, just inside the top 1,000 high schools nationwide and the only school from the Peoria area to rank that highly this year. It was also the third school outside of the Chicago area to rank with the top 1,000 – and the top 50 statewide – with the University of Illinois Laboratory High School in Urbana being ranked 162nd in the country and University High School in Normal being ranked 485th.
In the Peoria area, three other high schools ranked among the top 100 in Illinois, with Morton High School coming in at 76th, Washington Community High School coming in at 80th and Metamora High School being ranked 99th. As for Peoria Public Schools, Richwoods High School ranked as the 173rd best across Illinois.
Statewide, five of the top six high schools in Illinois came from Chicago Public Schools, with Northside College Preparatory High School ranking at the top, coming in as the 30th best high school in the United States. Walter Payton College Preparatory High School and Lane Technical High School followed, with Aurora’s Illinois Math and Science Academy and Jones College Prep in Chicago rounding out the top five.
In addition to Northside Prep, each of the top five ranked within the top 100 nationwide, with Payton College Prep ranking 54th, Lane coming in at 80th, IMSA ranked 88th, and Jones ranked 99th.
Nationwide, the top high school in the United States is Central Magnet School in Mufreesboro, Tennessee, followed by Signature School in Evansville, Indiana and Philadelphia’s Julia R. Masterman Secondary School.
