Don't miss out on an ounce of summer this year. Here are 12 upcoming Rockford area events

ROCKFORD, IL — On a good day, summer in northern Illinois can feel like an endless string of festivals, fairs and annual community events.

Luckily for us, that string continues for at least several more weeks.

We’ve made it through Memorial Day, the graduation parties, Flag Day, Juneteenth and the Fourth of July. And while that seems like a lot, there’s still plenty of summer left.

Here are 12 upcoming events, many of which have become summertime traditions for Rockford area families and fun seekers alike.

July 11-13: ByronFest

What: ByronFest delivers a full weekend of family fun and community spirit. The event features a carnival midway, pickleball and bags tournaments, a 5K/1‑mile fun run, a quilt show, and a lively parade. Two outdoor stages showcase live music — everything from rock bands to local “Idol” performances — while food vendors and a beer garden fuel the festive atmosphere

Where: Downtown Byron

Cost: Admission is free; wristband fees apply for carnival rides and beer garden access ($8 advance/$10 at gate). Group discounts and event-specific pricing may apply.

July 11-12: Kiwanis Brat Days

What: Alpine Kiwanis Brat Days is back in July, serving up savory Johnsonville brats, all-beef hot dogs, vegetarian “Impossible” brats, and meatless BBQ. Guests can enjoy walk-up, drive-thru, or on-site seating at either location, while live music adds to the festive atmosphere. Proceeds support local nonprofits and youth scholarships, making every bite count for the community

July 19-20: Food Truck Fest

What: Rockford’s biggest food truck event returns July 19–20, 2025, bringing a global street food celebration to East State Street and Mulford Road. Expect a flavorful lineup from across the Midwest, including Filipino, Thai, Puerto Rican, Colombian, Mexican, Laotian, and American soul food, served alongside cold drinks, live music, and local vendors

Where: 5909 E. State St., Rockford

Cost: Free

July 22-26: Stephenson County Fair

What: The Stephenson County Fair returns, offering a full slate of fair activities with even more value this year. For a $10 gate fee, attendees gain access to all grandstand events—including tractor and truck pulls, the “Tough Truck” challenge, demolition derbies, and nightly concerts at no extra cost. The fair also features livestock exhibits, youth competitions like pig scrambles and a talent show, carnival midway fun, food vendors, pony rides, Lego contests, crafts, and family games throughout the week.

Where: 2250 S. Walnut Road, Freeport

Cost: $10 General Admission

July 26-27: Japanese Summer Festival 

What: Celebrate Japanese culture in full bloom at Anderson Japanese Gardens’ annual Japanese Summer Festival. This cultural event offers attendees a taste of traditional Japanese arts, including tea ceremonies, taiko drumming performances by Teien no Taiko, ikebana flower arranging demonstrations, and artisanal workshops showcasing local craftsmen. Visitors can also enjoy authentic Japanese snacks and browse curated vendor booths while wandering serene garden paths under the summer sun

Where: 318 Spring Creek Road, Rockford

Cost: Includes regular garden admission: $13 weekdays / $15 weekends for adults; $11–$14 for seniors, students, and military members; free for children 5 and under.

Aug. 1-3: Rockford Festa Italiana 

What: Festa Italiana is Rockford’s beloved summer tradition that celebrates Italian culture with a weekend full of authentic food, music, and family-friendly activities. Held every August on the grounds of Boylan Catholic High School, the festival features classic Italian dishes, local vendors, cultural exhibits, and entertainment ranging from live music to dance performances. Highlights include a bocce ball tournament, carnival rides, Sunday mass, and the chance to sample homemade cannoli, sausage sandwiches, pasta, and more.

Where: Boylan Catholic High School, 4000 St. Francis Dr., Rockford

Cost: Daily admission is $8. Children 7 and under, active military personnel, and veterans are admitted free of charge. Ride wristbands and family packs are available for purchase onsite.

Aug. 5-10: Boone County Fair

What: The Boone County Fair in Belvidere is a classic Midwest fair experience that brings together agriculture, entertainment, and family fun. Spanning six days every August, the fair showcases exhibits, livestock shows, carnival rides, and a wide variety of food vendors serving everything from corn dogs to deep-fried desserts.

Where: Boone County Fairgrounds, 8791 IL-76, Belvidere, IL 61008

Cost: $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6–12, and free for kids under 6. Season passes, ride wristbands, and reserved seating for grandstand shows are available at additional cost.

Aug. 13-17: Winnebago County Fair

What: The Winnebago County Fair brings five days of family fun, food, and entertainment to Pecatonica with something for everyone to enjoy. From carnival rides and 4-H animal shows to tractor pulls, live music, and demolition derbies, the fairgrounds are packed with nonstop activity. Food vendors line the paths with everything from funnel cakes and fresh lemonade to pork chops on a stick. In the evenings, the Grandstand comes alive with concerts, rodeos, and motorsports, drawing crowds from across the region. The indoor exhibit halls showcase local crafts, baked goods, and artwork. It’s a tradition that continues to be a summer favorite in northern Illinois.

Where: 500 W. First St, Pecatonica 

Cost: Ticket options include a $15 season pass for unlimited weekend access (a $39 value), $7 daily admission for adults, $3 for kids ages 9–12, and free entry for ages 8 and under. Carnival mega-pass wristbands are $30 and cover unlimited rides in midday or evening sessions, again, separate from admission, which gets you onto the rides.

Aug. 17: Polish Fest

What: Rockford’s celebration of Polish heritage returns this summer at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with a lively day of music, culture, and traditional fare. From Syrena folk dancers to live polka bands and bingo games, it’s a full schedule of entertainment. Food lovers can indulge in pierogi, potato pancakes, smoked sausage, sauerkraut, pastries and both Polish and domestic beers.

Cost: Free

Sept. 6: Screw City Beer Festival 

What: Rockford’s annual celebration of craft beer at the 15th-annual Screw City Beer Festival, set for Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025. This outdoor festival brings together around 30 breweries, pouring everything from sours and farmhouse ales to IPAs and stouts, all with the Rock River as a scenic backdrop. Live music, local food vendors and a relaxed downtown atmosphere make it a fun, social highlight of the fall season for beer enthusiasts.

Where: 324 N. Madison St, Rockford

Cost: $55 for General Admission. $15 for Designated Driver Tickets. 

Sept. 6: Tamale Fest

What: Celebrate Latin American food and culture at Rockford’s Tamale Fest, back for its 9th year with a fiesta-style block party on Miracle Mile. The event features a cook-off to crown the city’s best tamale, alongside food trucks offering tacos, Puerto Rican dishes, Colombian fare, and more. Add live music, DJs, Aztec dancers, a lowrider car show, and Lucha Libre wrestling for a full-day celebration of flavor and tradition. 

Where: 5909 E State St, Rockford

Cost: $10 per person. Kids 10 and under get in free. 

Sept. 14-15: Greenwich Village Art Fair

What: The Greenwich Village Art Fair is the Midwest’s longest-running outdoor art fair and a beloved community tradition. Held on the scenic grounds of the Rockford Art Museum, the two-day juried event showcases around 150 artists presenting original works—everything from ceramics and paintings to jewelry and textiles. Live music from local musicians, children’s art activities, a curated marketplace, food trucks, and a champagne bar round out the experience. Proceeds benefit the Rockford Art Museum and help sustain its programs and exhibitions.

Where: 711 N Main Street, Rockford

Cost: $5 general admission. 12 and under are free.
