In a game where the Chicago Bears had a lot of players show why they are worthy of making the final 53-man roster, wide receiver Kaden Davis stood out above the rest, just as he has done all summer.
In Chicago’s preseason opening win against the Cleveland Browns, Davis had four receptions for 88 yards; his longest reception was 41 yards. However, what really makes a difference for receivers trying to make the roster is the ability to block.
Head coach Ben Johnson preaches a mentality of being physical and that includes when the receivers are blocking. Davis has taken to that so far in training camp and, as offensive coordinator Press Taylor explained, that physicality in the blocking game helped the Bears in a crucial part of the game last week.
“He’s done a great job,” Taylor said. “And it’s like you said, he continues to produce with the opportunities he’s been given. You’ve got to put wins on tape. He had a contested catch on the sideline over there. He had a couple other plays. He did a good job blocking. We had a big third down conversion on a run early with [RB] Roschon [Johnson] where he shows up and he’s blocking the safety. Kind of springs us for our longest run of the day. He put a lot of good things on tap, and he’s continued to do that. So that’s really all you can ask for from those guys. They make the most of their opportunities and he’s continued to do that. And I think that’s why you see more and more opportunities go his way.”
His next major opportunity will be in the Bears’ next preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals this Saturday. The Bengals should provide more of a challenge and help Johnson, Taylor and the rest of the offensive coaching staff assess what offensive players are worthy of a roster spot.
