In the first year under head coach Ben Johnson, the Chicago Bears’ offense was explosive, finishing in the top-10 in nearly every metric. Unfortunately, the defense was at the other end of the spectrum. Besides takeaways, the Bears defense last season was one of the worst in the league.
Linebacker Devin Bush, who signed a three-year, $30 million contract this offseason, was brought in to help get the defense back on track. Last season with the Cleveland Browns, he had three interceptions and returned two of those for touchdowns. He also played very well in coverage with eight pass breakups.
In his first offseason with the Bears, Bush has already learned a little about Johnson and how his offensive playing is helping the defense improve in training camp.
“That guy wants to score points. That’s what I got from him. He wants to win. So, I mean, I’m all for that,” Bush said. “Everything we do is Ben Johnson’s way. We go out there, he’s scripting plays, they’re great plays. And he helps us out because he shows us our weakness as a defense.”
Iron is already sharpening iron in training camp with the defense making plays early in training camp, including Bush with a pass breakup in the end zone on a pass intended for wide receiver Luther Burden III during Tuesday’s padded practice.
“It was a last-minute play,” Bush said. “Take a shot at the end zone. Our responsibility is to not let them in the end zone. Offense’s responsibility is [to] get the ball in the end zone. So just a competitive play and finished our practice in the two-minute drill.”
