Training camp has been an up-and-down journey for the Chicago Bears offense so far, although they’re night and day ahead of where they were at this point last summer in the first season under head coach Ben Johnson.
While the offense had a near-perfect first week of training camp, they’ve also had their share of struggles. Chicago’s joint practice against the Cincinnati Bengals was another up-and-down experience.
The highlight of the joint practice was quarterback Caleb Williams’ touchdown pass to tight end Colston Loveland, and the offense also succeeded in red zone periods. However, throughout the practice, the Bears’ offense struggled to contain Cincinnati’s defense, namely defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.
“Yeah, it’s definitely a test for us. It’s different styles out there,” Williams said. “Different body types, they do things differently over there. And it’s always a good challenge to be able to go versus somebody else and get a test from somebody else. They were a great test for us. They invested pretty heavily in the defense from last year and it showed up today. Then being able to cause some negative plays and things like that.”
The joint practice will be the extent of the Bears playing against the Bengals starters this season. Neither team is expected to have their starters in the game for their preseason bout this Saturday. Chicago will conclude their preseason against the Tennessee Titans, and they also have a joint practice scheduled with them a couple days before the game. It’ll provide another test for this Bears offense ahead of the regular-season opener against the Carolina Panthers.
