Ben Johnson describes Bears QB Caleb Williams during late-game situations

The Chicago Bears have built themselves a narrative this season as a fourth-quarter, never-say-die type of team that pulls out close wins in the end.

A big part of their success has come on the shoulders of second-year quarterback Caleb Williams, who leads the NFL in fourth quarter comebacks this season with four. Head coach Ben Johnson said he doesn’t notice a change in his quarterback’s demeanor in the late game situations, but believes Williams has confidence and comfort in them.

“I don’t know that, that’s a question you can ask him, if he changes over the course of the game,” Johnson said. “I don’t notice a difference in terms of demeanor or sideline communication at all. I think he’s been pretty consistent throughout staying locked in and dialed in and trying to just execute whatever comes to hand.

“In those particular cases, you’re in more drop back pass mode. I don’t want to say he’s got a more – a higher comfort level there, but yet that it is probably where he’s had the majority of his snaps over high school and college and now in the NFL. There probably is just a little bit of, okay, this is my wheelhouse. I know we’re going to throw it and defense knows we’re going to throw it, and yet I can go ahead and make a play. There might be something to that.”

Williams has elevated his game in multiple ways in his first year working with Johnson, and in doing so, the Bears are seeing much more success this season compared to last. It would be a lot less stressful if the Bears weren’t involved in the last-minute comeback victories, but they’ve shown the ability to get it done in a multitude of ways when it comes down to it.
