The relationship between a quarterback and center is essential for the offense to gel. However, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has played with a different center every season so far in the NFL.
He had a good rapport with Drew Dalman last season. But following Dalman’s surprise retirement, Williams had to rebuild this connection with his new center, Garrett Bradbury, who the Bears got in a trade acquired from the New England Patriots.
Williams and Bradbury got their first test working together against an opposing team in Chicago’s joint practice with the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday. While Williams said it was a good test, it also highlighted some areas of improvement especially after a fumbled snap.
“It was a good test for us, some things to work on for sure,” Williams said. “We had a fumbled snap on our first one, which isn’t something you want in a game or practice. It’s just being able to communicate, figure out what happened, if I was too quick or too slow trying to get moving against a good player across from us. It’s just him and I working together and communicating on those things.”
If Chicago’s starters play at some point in the preseason, it would be another good test for Williams and Bradbury’s chemistry so far. They still have a lot of time to build their relationship more before the Bears’ regular season opener against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 13.
